Who can subscribe to Update Talking Newspaper?
Anyone who lives in the Stoke-on-Trent or Newcastle-under-Lyme areas and who is unable to read standard newspaper print for whatever reason.
Do I have to be registered blind or partially sighted to receive Update Talking Newspaper services?
No. If you are unable to read standard newspaper print for reasons of your disability or health, you are welcome to join to our free service.
Why should I join Update?
Update can help you to keep in touch with what’s going on in our community. You can find out about local services and activities and learn more about issues that could affect you.
Can I listen to the programme on-line?
You can listen on-line. Our website also contains back issues so you can catch up with any issues you may have missed. Update’s website is new and we are still developing it further so we can bring more news and information and set up some on-line interest groups.
What if I haven’t got internet access at home?
Update is available on a memory stick and we can arrange for it to be delivered by post to your home every fortnight in a special pouch.
How do I listen to the memory stick?
If you have your own pc or laptop with a USB slot, you can listen on your own pc/laptop.
If you don’t have access to a computer, we will provide you with a simple to use play-back machine. We are happy to come and show new listeners how to use the machine.
When do I need to send the USB sticks back to Update?
We re-use USB sticks to record our next programme, so please send the USB back as soon as you have finished with it or within 14 days. If you need to keep it for longer, please let us know. The pouch the USB stick comes in has a return address label. Just pop the memory stick in the pouch, seal the Velcro edge and arrange for the wallet to be put in a postbox. No postage is required.
Who pays for this service?
Update is run by volunteers and we rely on donations, grants and fundraising to pay for playback units, USB sticks, pouches and other running costs .Royal Mail deliver our pouches free of charge.
Donations are always very welcome!
